One Thing Is Certain ...
Either Anita Hill or Clarence Thomas is a Liar !!
Yesterday, the five right wing members of the Supreme Court legalized police harrassment and even voted against states rights in their drive to help corporations lock down their control of America.
How did we get here? The answer: One judge at a time. Conservatives generally, and Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah in particular, have had a decades long campaign to take over the Supreme Court. The Warren Court - 1953-1968 - had rendered landmark decisions in favor of people ...
Brown v. Board of Education - Established equal rights
Baker v. Carr and Reynolds v. Sims - Established "one man, one vote"
Gideon v. Wainwright - Gave indigent criminal defendants the right to legal counsel
The right wing was outraged! Starting with Nixon, Republican presidents have had the opportunity to put right wing partisans onto the court until today, we are at risk of losing our nation through judicial activism of the right. We won't see people winning against corporations for a long time.
One such right wing appointment is Clarence Thomas. One of the most striking things about Thomas is that during his confirmation hearing, serious charges about his fitness for office were raised by University of Oklahoma law professor Anita Hill. Hill had worked for Thomas. Her sworn testimony was damning. Thomas was a sexual predator who tormented female employees relentlessly.
At this point, we should be clear. The sex aspect of the story got the headlines, but the real disqualification was the total dishonesty that her testimony confirmed.
The key point to remember is this:
--> One of them - Anita Hill or Clarence Thomas - is LYING! <--
Their respective testimony, as well as subsequent books, is diametrically opposite. There is no room of misinterpretation or faulty memory. What each of them has had to say about it directly accuses the other of outright, conscious, and unquestionable lying!
On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the congressional hearing where all this came out, author and Journalist Leslie Bennetts wrote this summary of the case for Newsweek. Surviving Clarence
Although four other women waited to corroborate Hill's testimony, they were not allowed to testify. Orrin Hatch led a lynch mob of Republicans who did everything to discredit and humiliate one lone woman.
According to Leslie Bennets:
The Senate Judiciary Committee interrogated Hill with a ferocity that shocked even political veterans, impugning everything from her competence to her sanity to her sexuality. Like a horrifyingly mismatched gladiatorial contest pitting a powerful gang of well-armed men against a woman with no defense save her own account of what someone had done to her against her will, the televised hearings mesmerized the nation. Many female observers were aghast at the way Hill was bullied and demeaned by the committee, whose members seemed both hostile and clueless about the pervasiveness of sexual harassment in the workplace.
Thomas refused to answer the charges, saying instead that those who opposed him were engaged in “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks.” What was Hill? Butterscotch?
Who was lying? Jeffrey Toobin, lawyer, author, and legal analyst for CNN and The New Yorker, wrote this: “Virtually all the evidence that has emerged since the hearings corroborates Hill’s version of events."
Does it bother anyone else that for twenty years, a sexual predator and outright liar may have been sitting, sullen and silent, on the highest court in America?
So, where are we now.
--> The Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who refused to allow testimony from the other women waiting to support Anita Hill, was Joe Biden; now our Vice President.
--> The leader of the Republican lynch mob, Orrin Hatch, just won the Republican primary in Utah, virtually assuring his election to an unprecedented seven terms. Hatch will be the most senior Republican Senator, and would be elected President pro tempore of the United States Senate if the Republicans take control of the Senate.
--> Although conservative legislators in Oklahoma ultimately suceeded in driving Anita Hill out (at one point, threatening to de-fund the school of law), she has survived in spite of what she endured and is now a professor of social policy, law and women's studies at Brandeis University.
--> In one of the few real gains, within a year of Anita Hill's testimony, newly energized feminine activists finally got a bill passed giving harassment victims the right to seek federal damage awards, back pay and reinstatement. Sexual-harassment complaints filed with the EEOC increased by 50 percent in the year following the hearings. In an interview, Hill said, “Women’s willingness to come forward and file sexual-harassment complaints doubled in the five years after that.”
--> Clarence Thomas' marriage at the time failed, he divorced his wife, and is currently married to Virginia Thomas, a Tea Party activist and outspoken conservative. And he's still providing the crucial fifth vote for cases like Citizens United and making George Bush president in Bush v. Gore.
